I learned that first and foremost, taking business administration classes is a good idea if you want to start a business of your own. Ms. Driscoll talked about the importance of joining many organizations for opportunities. Strategic marketing can use editorial pitches, brand, and image. Case studies may include award submissions, social media, photography, event marketing, and web development. There was good focus and the more business aspects of design over actual designing processes, although color choice and logo design was briefly discussed. Ms. Driscoll also hated on clip art, which I didn't think much about, but now do agree on.
I had two questions...
What's the process of getting clients?
For her personal experience, cilents first came from connections. Social connections and really putting your business out there is important for interactions with clients.
How many alternate designs are usually made?
Although this wasn't directly answered, she spoke of the differing views of people. It's natural for the client and designer to disagree, and even for disagreements to occur within the design team(s). I'd assume that if time allows, playing around with many alternate designs is a good idea for the people involved to be satisfied with the final product.
